Jürgen Basedow

Jürgen Basedow is an emeritus director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law at Hamburg and a professor of law at the University of Hamburg. Before being appointed to the Institute in 1997 he served as a professor of law at the University of Augsburg and at the Free University of Berlin. He has been teaching as a visiting professor in many universities across the globe.

He is a member of the Institut de Droit international and was Secretary General of the International Academy of Comparative Law. His main research areas are private international law, competition law and European private law. He has served on numerous advisory committees in Germany and of the European Commission. In particular, we was chairman of the German Monopolies Commission, a member of the European Commission’s expert group on insurance contract law and of the EU Commission’s Think Tank on private enforcement of competition law.
